Shortlisted: An Echoing Bark

Animals are my greatest sources of easy inspiration—not just for stories but for art. I used to create Polynesian designs on a regular basis, and I want to get back into it. Tonight, I forced myself to sit and sketch dogs. This guy emerged.

As much as I enjoy Photoshop, breaking out the sketchbook and pens is a different experience. There is no ctrl+z on paper. Pencil can be erased to a degree, but ink is final. I'm not always up to the pressure. It helps to know I can upload an image later and fix it digitally.

I may go back in and push this design/fix some of the flaws, but these designs usually turn out fine as is. Mistakes can be fixed by joining lines or filling in areas. The end result could be on any T-shirt or tattoo selection, and most people wouldn't notice the areas I think are flawed. The design still translates as a canine.

The subjective nature of art and writing is much of its appeal. Moods and seasons of life flow through words the same as through ink. Though life lately has had a somber undertone, I'm doing my best to stay positive and grateful. This very feeling was what I transferred to a short story for a recent Reedsy competition. At its center was a loyal dog.

An Echoing Bark is the tale of a woman haunted by her past. When a four-legged reminder walks through the door of her inn, she struggles to process the guilt and grief that comes with him. The result is a second chance and renewed perspective, shared over tea with a stranger.

Even more than getting shortlisted, I was lifted by the comments readers left. The story made them feel warm and cozy, exactly the feeling I was hoping to pass along. I won't always hit the mark, but this time, I did.

Feel free to check out the story here.

Keep on smilin'!
