Before Christmas last year, my husband and I spent a week in Key West. Part of the fun of traveling is discovering the local Little Free Libraries. I found several registered in Key West through the official website, so we walked several miles around the area to find them.
Green Parrot Bar had one of the largest LFL's I have ever seen. It was loaded with books and painted to look like shelves on the outside. What a joy! Had we found it sooner, we would have eaten at the bar to thanks them for supporting creativity and reading. Don't miss this little gem if you visit the southernmost tip of the contiguous US!
We stayed about two miles out of downtown Key West, closer to the connecting bridge. It turned out there was another LFL less than a mile from our place, just outside someone's house/rental property. I got up early one morning and crossed a pedestrian bridge to arrive.
This one was smaller but still had a decent selection of books. I chose The Couple Next Door but ended up deciding to trade it out.
It lifts me when I can intersect the joy of reading with healthy habits. I've often carried books the mile or so to the closest LFL to my house. The fresh morning air and hike up our huge neighborhood hill make for a fun journey. Sometimes I come home with a new book, sometimes not.
Locating LFLs is like treasure hunting for me. I've meandered miles through unfamiliar territory trying to find unmarked boxes of books. Sometimes new, unregistered ones pop up at parks near my house. I'll keep hunting them down and depositing literature far and wide.
Keep on smilin'!
