Inktober into NaNoWriMo

October and November tend to be my most creative months. Each day of October, I do one ink drawing for Inktober. I managed to meet this goal despite that hubs and I adopted an orphan kitten.

This is my two-month-old ball of trouble: Napili (Pili for short which means friend or companion in Hawaiian)

Keeping him away from wires, choking hazards, and teaching him to be gentle with hands has been an undertaking. But we all have to learn how to love those around us. Hubs and I are being patient while enjoying our rambunctious "fluffy son."

I drew Napili several times for Inktober this month. Though he rarely slows down, I've caught some sweet pictures of him napping. This provides endless inspiration and reference material.

I wish I could say the same for novel inspiration.

With November first less than ten hours away, I'm gearing up to write a new novel, 50,000 words during the next 30 days. My dilemma? I haven't planned the novel or characters as much as I typically have by this point. Yes, I have a rough idea of where I want the story to go, but it's a little intimidating to work with characters I haven't fully fleshed out.

Then, I realized I could use this lack of preparation as an experiment.

Since I've written ten full novels, why not chart this one using a different method? A lax approach may allow for more creative veering during the writing process. This will also be an opportunity to use a different method another author swears by: Planning a novel using an opening scene, a midpoint scene, and a climax—then connect the dots.

I do at least have those "ingredients."

I plan to use my love of games to propel the plot. What is it like to be an older gamer—one born in the 80's who grew up with most of the first home video game consoles, no cheat codes or easy modes? What happens when someone feels pressure to "outgrow" their hobbies and join "normal" people?

And what happens when a character decides she's content living life her way, using games to make a living?

These questions are driving my plotline. I'll map this NaNoWriMo experience day by day and see where I end up. Here's to trying a new path!

Keep on smilin'!
